A serve yourself, gourmet, organic deli, with no American cheese in sight! In one particular mall we were introduced to the joy that is Whole Foods.

Once we had the van back unfortunately the weather wasn’t playing ball, so we decided to hit the shops for the afternoon. We called Escape to let them know about the situation and to discuss compensation when we returned the van.

During breakfast I received a call from them to say that they had found a fuel leak, and confirmed that we had literally been throwing money down the drain. While the guys worked on the van we went an had our first American Diner experience. The following morning we took the van in for a checkup and explained the gas smell and issues we had had. It took more than an hour we managed to find a suitable place! With it’s super steep streets and no parking zones, San Francisco was a very van-unfriendly town.

Following the movie we undertook the near impossible task of trying to find a place to park the van overnight. It had been a while since we had a Friday night out, so Grace and I spiced things up with a trip to In-N-Out Burger, followed by our first movie of the trip. Unfortunately due to the delays in getting out of the park we met Friday afternoon traffic heading into San Francisco, so it was nightfall by the time we hit Fog City. We did stop at a rest stop to make a killer lunch with a few unemployed locals sniffing around. Given that it was due a service we decided we would take it to get looked at in San Francisco the next morning. The rest of the drive went without a hitch, except the van continued to guzzle gas at an alarming rate. It was a 6mile journey back to the main road that ended up taking more than an hour, and by the time we linked back up with the highway my knuckles were numb from clenching the wheel so hard and we were actually behind schedule. With every branch we scraped against we could feel our bond getting smaller. It was also the most pot-holed road imaginable, and I couldn’t drive faster than 5mph as I had my head out the window watching that the tyres weren’t going over the edge. This road looked like it would lead out of the park until we went round one corner and it suddenly became a one way road carved in the side of a cliff, barely wide enough for the van. I turned the van around and we were re-routed to another road. We drove for a few minutes before reaching a dead end. We continued along the road taking photos at several great viewpoints, before the GPS told us to make a right turn onto a gravel road. I got my Gollum on and scaled as close to the water curtain as possible, copying the climbing techniques of the many lizards basking on the rocks. Our first stop was the highest waterfall in the park, Yosemite Falls, which were roaring with all the melted snow from the severe winter. Our trusty GPS talked of a shortcut that would shave around an hour off the drive to San Francisco, so we figured we had plenty of time to stop here and there on the road out of the park. When you’re travelling for 8 months you learn to appreciate the small things.

Given that we wouldn’t have access to a shower for at least a few days once we left the park, we headed over to the camp services area and made the most of the unlimited hot water and free toiletries. By now Grace and I had preparing breakfast in the van working like clockwork, and we we getting equally as adept at packing up the van to move on to the next destination. We had a big drive ahead of us that day, but there were a few postcard perfect spots to check out before we left. Waking up to feel the freezing cold in Yosemite National Park after our second night there meant that our Campervan hadn’t been savagely ripped apart like a tin can, despite us toying with the bears by keeping toothpaste locked inside our bags and not in the bear cages.
